Shephard - Winfield Scott

Source: Waveland Independent newspaper, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana February 28, 1913

Winfield Scott Shepherd was found dead in his room on Thursday evening. He had been suffering with asthma and a complication of disease, but was feeling as well as usual during the day. He was apparently getting ready to retire and fell partly on the bed. He has been living with Henry Hodgkin in a small house near the Van. Funeral services were held on Saturday morning at the home of his brother Newton Shepherd. The boy was interred at Union. Mr. Shepherd was born about a mile east of Browns Valley, June 2, 1846. He and his twin brother, Taylor, were named after the then famous generals. He was married to Charlotte Hann. The one daughter is dead but a grandchild, Cora Hickman survives them. A fatality has followed the Shepherd family. Two years ago in September, two of the brothers John and Taylor, were brutally murdered in Oklahoma. A year later, John's son fell from a light tower in Wisconsin and was killed. Newton, the youngest, is the only surviving brother. -- kbz
